Set in 1980s Detroit at the height of the crack epidemic and the War on Drugs, White Boy Rick is based on the true story of a blue-collar father and his teenage son Rick who became an undercover police informant and later a drug dealer, before he was abandoned by his handlers and sentenced to life in prison.

Yann Demange is a British film director. He graduated from both the London College of Communication and the National Film and Television School. He made his directorial film debut with '71 in 2014. It premiered in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival and went on to receive critical acclaim. Demange won the British Independent Film Award for Best Director and was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Demange has also been hailed as a promising new voice in British filmmaking. In 2018 he directed White Boy Rick, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.
Newcomer Merritt plays Rick as both a naive boy who pretends to act tough but wants to do the right thing. (…) McConaughey and Powley also turn in some great performances alongside Merritt.
