The Factory begins with clear thriller elements, morphing into an action-packed heist film set in a claustrophobic and haunting, decaying environment. Bykov has already explored the thriller genre in constrained spaces in his debut, Live but this time, the social aspect is more prominent.

Yuri Bykov was born in 1981 in Novomichurinsk, Ryazan Oblast. Bykov grew up in poverty. After several failed attempts to enter acting studies we was given a seat, and studied at Russian Insitute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) and then at Russian State University of Cinematography (VGIK) for four years. After VGIK he played in various theaters.

From 2005 to 2009 he made commercials and tried to shoot short films. In 2010 Bykov made his feature film debut with the film To Live. In 2013, his film The Major premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2014, the social drama film The Fool was released. The picture received a number of prestigious awards. In 2017, Yuri announced that he has betrayed the progressive generation and that he will take an indefinite hiatus from directing, but will still finish his work on The Guard, set to be released in 2018.
